Counseling or Coaching?
What is the difference between nutrition consultation, diet assessment, nutrition counseling and nutrition coaching? Although there are certainly over-laps in all the above services, they are different in style, approach, and structure.
A nutrition consultation, for example, is often provided for someone who is newly diagnosed with diabetes or a cholesterol issue. Teaching is also provided.
A diet assessment may be requested by a physician, for example, who is seeking information regarding the quality of a patient's overall nutritional intake.
Nutrition counseling often includes a combination of dietary assessment, consultation, medical nutrition advice, teaching and creating of meal plans.
Nutrition coaching is a more directed process where the nutritionist and client partner together in order to achieve goals. Assessment and dietary teaching will be included. However the client is asked to do some homework, set and record intentions, and learn to monitor his/her own progress. More accountability and "reporting in" is agreed upon from the beginning. Nutrition Coaching can be a very empowering experience for the client.
